Sire: Aussie Guns-n-Roses ARI#
30036107 Medium Rose Grey GnR is now owned by Fun in the Country Alpacas in Michigan. He remains on our "Hall of Fame" as herdsire emeritus, for all that he has contributed!
Deciding which herdsire to use in your breeding program? Here's what we do..
Pedigree: An excellent indicator of a male's EBV (estimated breeding value). We want lines with established pre-potency that have demonstrated sustained fineness through at least 4-5 years. Click on GnR's ARI cert icon above.
Conformation: It has to be a given, if it's not, the search stops here. We like a male that is well proportioned, but compact. We want good bite and head. Solid bone and strong fore and hindquarters. We prefer good sized testicles and want to see him breeding before age 2 and maintaining a vigorous libido thereafter...but an even non aggressive temperament. GnR is our poster boy for all of the above.
Fiber: Hand and uniformity: That's easy! Just put it against your cheek.A grid sample can be found by going to our website...he's consistant across a broad blanket top to belly, brisket to tail.
Fineness: It's not about 1st shear micron. What's the 4th shear like? Don't hide the SD and % over 30 micron...that's what the industry is crying for. And while your at it, check out the difference between the micron in primary and secondary fibers and their respective SDs (on skin biopsy stats).
Brightness: GnR's fiber glows...a quality not lost on every one of his offspring.
Density: Fiber doesn't have to "feel" dense...more often than not that's a sign of coarseness. Quite simply, GnR is the densest grey biopsied through Jim Watt's lab in Australia, and they've been doing it for over 20 years. If you click on the histogram icon, you will see his biopsy results. An explanation of those numbers can be found on our website.
Length: His fiber is ridiculously long. His 4th shear (at right) is only 315 days.
Dam: Snowmass Cassanova's Silver Fox ARI#
830258 Medium Silver Grey Full Peruvian - to come out of the Snowmass program.
Her 2005 cria, Snowmass Hakuna Matata is a top drawer black herdsire standing at Snowmass Alpacas.
Her 2006 cria, Snowmass Artic Fox, with Artic Blue as sire, took first at the Futurity in 2007.
Her 2007 cria, RRoyal Fox is likewise outstanding and proudly carries his dad's fleece characteristics. The fleece picture at right is at just 5 1/2 months of age. The luster length and definition are obvious. What is less obvious is the fineness. Small wonder. His dad, Royal Bronze is still fine well into maturity. He was 14.9 micron at 2 1/2 years of age!! RRoyal Fox took first at the Nationals. We are pleased that he has found a perch at the top of Laura Coussen's breeding program at Kissin' Coussens Alpacas in Washington.
There was no let up in 2008. Tempest is an outstanding non fading true black who is starting to show very fine fiber and likewise has Snowmass Royal Bronze as her dad.

His kids still win big in the ring...2016 Gold Country Gathering KC son won RCC behind our own RR Dizzy Gillespie in Grey Male and KC daughter won Color Championship, grey female AND KC son won Black Color Championship (RR Lancelot)
KC took his first championship at 8 months of age. Since then, his fleece has maintained its length and fineness and he remains one of the best grey males in the country.
If you have a look at his Watt follicle testing results, the reasons will be obvious. The mix of black and white fibers in his grey is homogeneous in micron. He is the only alpaca, male or female, that carries the best characteristics of the Snowmass Peruvian Casanova and Guns n Roses lines. His production has not disappointed with multiple championships among his offspring.
His follicle density testing by Ian Watt is outstanding at his sampling at 2 years of age:
Density: 57.9mm/mm2
Seconday: Primary fiber ratio: 9.8:1
In-skin primary fiber diameter: 22.3 micron SD 3.2
In-skin secondary fiber micron: 13.7 micron SD 2.5
Comments:
"High density coupled with an excellent set of numbers for the secondary fiber population give this male potential as a significant sire in his color group. a group not known for its uniformity within each fiber population.
This is a significant animal for silver grey alpacas, where the black fibers tend to be very strong in micron and vary across the staple in most alpacas of this colour"
